While working on these compositions, it started to become clear to me that the sounds that were emerging were not completely of my doing. To sit down for a session with the synthesizers was, in its most “inspired” or “productive” form, almost more of a conversation with these machines. It sometimes felt as if, in my programming and experimenting, I was allowing the instruments to express something that was contained inside them, waiting to be experienced. My most important task, in these moments, was simply to listen – to listen closely enough that I might hear with my whole body, from which the almost automatic impulse to turn this knob, flip that switch or press these keys would guide the performance.

It’s hard to claim authorship over a creative work that is born in this way. Would it have come to be without my direct action? Probably not. And yet, what claim do I really have to something that I never fully intended to create in the first place?
